The University of Southern Queensland in Australia has initiated this conference and is joined by Stirling University in Scotland and Massey University in New Zealand in presenting it. This conference brings together a number of people who have had considerable experience in using information and communication technologies in educational and community settings. Their experience has led them to think innovatively about the ways in which we might open up the potential that information and communication technologies offer learning communities in a range of settings.

Communities and industries are changing profoundly as the world becomes more globalised. What does this mean for institutions preparing graduates to become active citizens and productive members of the work force? These institutions have to explore new ways of developing graduate capabilities and competencies that will meet the demands of an inexorably changing society. The 2007 Academia Industry Conference aims to bring together academia, industry and community to examine how the demands of this globalising society can be met preparing world graduates for the future.

EUCEN has taken up objectives for the creation of a European area of higher education for the development of University Continuing Education (UCE):
- excellence of teaching and research according to international standards
- international student mobility
- suitable changes of university structures promoting LLL
- output and work related learning content for the promotion of employability.
This conference at Hannover will focus on the latter two objectives. LLL and employability, even though subject of a European strategy, must be promoted in the regional context.
