Who Should Attend?

The Conference will showcase research and practice of what in North America is called ‘Service to the Community’. Although newly discovered by some universities, service to the community, has a long tradition in others and, in many cases, is recognized as an explicit mandate in the university charter. Service is understood to be the third mission of univer-sities, alongside Teaching and Research. Service and community engagement takes many different forms. Examples are community-based research and learning, assistance in regional development, continuing and community education, technology transfer, and other forms of knowledge sharing and linkages.

Who Should Attend?
The conference is designed to attract researchers, policy-makers and practitioners across the many fields of Place Management, Social Capital, Regional Development, Lifelong Learning and Regeneration. The conference will include keynote addresses, workshops and a new style ‘Debating Den’. It will appeal to policy-makers and practitioners in these areas particularly from regional development agencies, local and national government agencies and regeneration organisations, and will also be of significant interest to the research and academic community working in these fields. The structure of the conference will facilitate the sharing of experiences and research findings across a wide range of interests including:

Biography, memory, narrative and knowledge are very crucial issues in the field of education, in the study and experiences of lifewide and lifelong learning, and in adult life as a whole. They are studied as objects, processes or focuses, that enable us to understand the way people learn, the choices they make (including how these may be structured), the role and nature of story, and how they make sense of and compose meaning in their lives (as well as our own). They are the main focus of our research. Auto/biographic and life history approaches are the common ground for the ESREA network on Life History and Biographical Research.

The American Association for Adult and Continuing Education (AAACE) is dedicated to the belief that lifelong learning contributes to human fulfillment and positive social change. It is the nation's premiere adult education organization dedicated to being the leading source in the field of adult learning.

Proposals are still being accepted for the Commission for International Adult Education (CIAE). These proposals should address internationally related adult education topics. The deadline for proposal submissions is Tuesday, July 15, 2008.

This conference will help delegates to interrogate new and emerging relationships between citizens and corporations. Those in business, banking, legal, government, industrial, the armed forces as well as the public and voluntary sectors (amongst many others) will find attendance stimulating and useful. The principal focus of the conference will be the interface zone between the corporate sector and civil society. It will interrogate difficult and new pathways to the future.

This will be an interactive conference. There will be a mixture of academic and practical sessions, keynote addresses and world café discussions. Delegates will be asked to bring a willingness to engage and to problem solve. Additionally, there will be case study presentations and visits to demonstration projects. Wrapped around the conference will be an IAP2 training event for delegates to upgrade their qualifications (should they wish) in public participation processes. This training will be provided by international trainers of extremely high calibre.

Knowledge in Motion '08 is an international conference exploring how higher education institutions (HEIs) mobilize knowledge to affect regional development. Regional Development is understood here in a holistic sense as contributing to the economic, social and/or cultural well-being of citizens at the local or regional (sub-national) level. The conference will further explore ways in which research, teaching and practice create and apply knowledge with a social, economic, cultural, environmental, or health impact. This conference will not only be about knowledge mobilization, it will itself involve knowledge mobilization.
