Dear Friends,
As a member of the World Social Forum International Council (WSF-IC), the International Council for Adult Education (ICAE) participates in the WSF Global Day of Action (26th January 2008) by encouraging and inviting all member organizations, campaigns, social movements and NGOs working in the field of education to partake in a global call for action in favour of the right to education for all. This call for action demands from governments and policymakers across the world for renewed commitments and efforts toward the fulfilment of the right to education for all as a universal human right. It comes at a most opportune time where the world over commemorates the 60th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 2008.
In this light, we therefore invite you to widely distribute and circulate the call for action enclosed in this mail -- encouraging your networks to send it on the 26th of January 2008 -- to local and national authorities and policy makers; various bodies in the United Nations (UN); and international development agencies and cooperation to remind them that this right has yet to be fulfilled.
For further information and inquiries, please contact ICAE at: icae.anjani@gmail.com or secretariat@icae.org.uy.
In Solidarity,
Paul Balanger, ICAE President
Celita Eccher, ICAE Secretary-General

The Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra in Raploch Youth is a project that aims to use an innovative methodology called ‘El Sistema’ to teach classical music to children from very early ages. The project has been going on for more than 30 years in Venezuela. This fantastic orchestra is indeed the flagship of an education system which gives 250,000 young people the chance to learn an instrument, getting them away from drugs, guns and crime in the shanty towns. The talented musicians of the National System of Venezuelan Youth and Children's Orchestras are a source of national pride, like football stars in other Latin American countries.
Sir Simon Rattle, director of the Berlin Philharmonic, said that the country's youth orchestras in Venezuela were doing the most important work in classical music anywhere in the world. Now Scotland is taking the lead, establishing a similar system in Raploch, Stirling. The project will start in 2008 and it promises to provide a groundbreaking programme of social inclusion.
